BIOGRAPHY: Rita Shane, Pharm.D., FASHP, FCSHP is Director of Pharmacy Services at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, a 1000 bed acute, tertiary care, teaching institution in Los Angeles and Assistant Dean, Clinical Pharmacy Services, at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Pharmacy. She is responsible for over 170 staff members.
Dr. Shane developed one of the first pharmacist and technician career ladders, developed a clinical pharmacy intervention program in 1983 to document the role of pharmacists in preventing adverse drug events, and has created a number of clinical specialty positions. She and her staff have been active participants in the development of evidence-based medication guidelines at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Her significant practice achievements include being the 1995 recipient of the John Webb Visiting Professorship in Hospital Pharmacy on the subject of management excellence. Her presentation on "Pharmacy Without Walls" was published in February 1996 issue of the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacists. She was selected as the 1996 keynote speaker for the Hong Kong Society of Hospital Pharmacists. Her participation in the development of a "Prospective Physician Reviewer System for Strategic Management of Therapeutic Advances" was awarded 1st place in the 1993 Abbott National Pharmacy Quality Awards. In 1999, the Pharmacy Department was awarded both 1st and 2nd place in the Abbott National Pharmacy Quality Awards in the areas of continuity of care and pain management. She is co-investigator of one of four 2000 National Patient Safety Foundation Research Awards to study "The Impact of Dedicated Medication Nurses Upon the Rate of Medication Administration Errors: A Randomized, Controlled Trial".
Her current areas of interest are patient safety and defining quality from a pharmacy perspective and ensuring that patients receive optimal medication management regardless of where they access the healthcare system. Dr. Shane is an active member of CSHP and ASHP and has served on a number of committees, task forces and councils. She has presented at local, state and national meetings and has published a number of papers in the pharmacy literature, most recently in the areas of strategic management of pharmaceutical expenses, outpatient prospective payment, quality, healthcare fraud and abuse, and pain management.
Rita Shane is one of the leading voices in Health-system Pharmacy today. She is a widely recognized opinion-leader on several fronts in the profession, and has been a featured lecturer and author for numerous industry publications. She is a Fellow of the American Society of Health-system Pharmacy (FASHP), and has particular interest in staff development and issues which impact women in the profession.
